  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from J. Hulet -- My least favorite Modesitt jr Sci-Fi novel. : What would life be like if you were living through a seemingly never-ending series of holocausts style planetary collapses? Corvyn is a cynic. He questions everything and tries to hold himself above the mundane ideals that normal people struggle with. He’s been there, done that, is powerful enough in the world order that exists to resist almost anyone, but he refuses to take a leadership role himself. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mary Soon LeeTop Contributor: Fantasy Books -- An interesting endeavor, but I remained detached from the characters. : I have hugely enjoyed quite a number of Modesitt's fantasy books and have also considerably enjoyed several of his science fiction books, so I was looking forward to his newest book. It's a standalone work that I would class as science fantasy, but which others might label as science fiction, ideas from quantum physics being used to explain elements that would otherwise seem fantastical. It's a departure from his earlier work in style and theme. Trying to prevent widespread devastation, the main character, Corvyn, journeys to regions with different religions/philosophies. He encounters pain and difficulties and nightmare along the way, and yet I found myself rather detached from his efforts. This is notable, because I typically find Modesitt's fiction highly immersive. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2020 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Zen -- Completely failure. : This is such a slow, boring repetitive story. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Lady Cara -- A disappointment for Modesitt fans : I have read a lot of Modesitt’s books and I am especially fond of his Recluse saga books which I have read several times so I was excited to read this book. However I was disappointed. There are ‘gods/ people with powers from various religions and even though I have read some mythology, there were quite a few characters I was unfamiliar with and what their various aspects/ powers might be and there really wasn’t a lot of explanation. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mardy -- Religion and Truth : Possible to have a world whose primary function is to allow major and minor religions to coexist while expressing religious truth? As a result of past worlds - originating back to Earth - destroyed when one religion struggles to singular power over the others. It’s an interesting concept and relies heavily on Modesitt’s ability to create the central character who faces what comes no matter the cost. Adiamante is one of my favorite Modesitt books because I think it asks deeper questions about power and human frailty. I think the Quantum Shadows world is beyond my ability to believe in which says more about me than Modesitt. Still an interesting look at religion and belief. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Fantasy Devourer -- Modesitt indulges himself in this book : I have read an awful lot of Modesitt books both his fantasy and science fiction and in general I really enjoy them. When I saw this book was out I thought fantastic. Maybe it would be similar to Hammer of Darkness or the Octagonal Raven. However I was more than somewhat disappointed. The plot is virtually nonexistent. Instead you get a character travelling from place to place sampling gourmet meals. He interacts with some other characters in insignificant ways and at the end of the story pretty much everything is solved in a way that makes the journey almost entirely unnecessary. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- The story is in engaging me : A seemingly endless parade of poorly developed characters is the only storyline. As usual, we start to see the main character flesh out with each encounter but its hard to stay engaged. I put this book down a half dozen times out of boredom but always came back due to enjoyment I've found in so many other of Modesitts books. I was hard pressed to score this a four star review. Perhaps 3.5 ( Reviewed in Canada on October 14, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Quantum aspect storyline : Modesitt is my all time favourit writer. The athmosfere created in his books seems a real world. The storyline logical supported with occurance of magic. Takes you into another univers. However the quantum mistery here is not logical. The science is not supporting the story line. Random us&e of "quantum" does not make sense. The theory and quantum reality is a very difficult subject to accomodate in any fantasy oriented story. ( Reviewed in Australia on September 6, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Boojum7 -- It helps if you know about a lot of different religions. : This book is pretty subtle, but you can follow easily even if you don't get all the details. ( Reviewed in Canada on September 26, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David crozier -- What the future may hold : An intriguing story about the future of mankind ( Reviewed in Canada on February 12, 2021 )
