• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- An historical novel that was 40 years in the making. : The author tells the tale in a non-linear fashion, introducing his real historical characters with as much care for their thought as for their words and actions: the Italian soldier who is about to become part of a military assault using a two-man submarine, and then, a Spanish war widow from Algeciras, Spain, who runs her bookstore in The Line, the border of British Gibraltar and Spain. His research allowed him to recreate the history, delicately adding his smooth fiction-writing talents to supplement the government accounts and information gathered from the survivors. Pérez-Reverte es un maestro de la narrativa y esta novela está muy bien lograda: un tema interesante que no conocía, describe su investigación periodística y los relatos que faltan los llena con su narrativa de ficción, de esa forma tenemos la historia completa del buzo italiano y la librera española, sin poder delimitar la diferencia entre ficción y realidad. Pero a pesar de lo prometedor del contexto, la novela no termina de enganchar; es todo muy arquetípico, muy manido. Toda la trama discurre con levedad y poca profundidad, casi como las someras aguas donde transcurre la acción; con suficiente oficio, sin duda, pero casi con prisa y con escasa alma.
